Gabe Wong 黄永康
Gabriel Wong (Panama, 1985) is an artist and architect of Chinese descent. Growing up in Central America, he developed a profound sense of awe and appreciation for the fauna and flora of the tropics. Gabriel runs his own architecture firm and combines his career with his art, whilst simultaneously being active in academia for over a decade. His work is eclectic, drawing inspiration from architecture, Asian influences, and tropical roots — a reflection of his personal journey and the cultural encounters between East and West. Throughout his artistic career, Gabriel has had the opportunity to collaborate with brands such as Montblanc, Nike, and Boeing. He has served as the scribe for the churches of Panama City, creating historical records signed by Pope Francis. He has participated in biennials such as BIENALSUR 2021 and the Beijing Biennial 2022. His art has been gifted to heads of state and is present in private collections across all five continents.
Gabriel Wong stands out as a colourist in addition to his explosive
yet rhythmically measured expressionist bravura, which imparts an implicit sense of movement to each work. His innovative artistic signature is inspired by the traditional art of Chinese calligraphy, where each character carries both literary meaning and aesthetic expression. The splashes of colour in Wong' swork therefore challenge the two-dimensional visual space of the canvas, extending into the observer' s space with vibrant chromatic contrasts that appear to float in three dimensions, bringing to life birds of paradise and orchids that seem to have metamorphosed into a mosaic of butterflies in flight.
